The product itself is not new. It is simply the chewable version of the tablet that has been on the market in the United States for the last thirty years. However, the packaging is new. According to the manufacturer, the product could prove interesting for women who often forget to take their pills and who cannot, or refuse, to rely on one of the various time-released products like skin patches, vaginal rings or injections.

The product is presented in a nice credit card-sized velvety pouch. The discreet packaging and new shape could make it attractive to women who want to carry their contraceptives in their handbag. The tablet can either be chewed or swallowed. Let us hope the packaging does not resemble a pack of chewing gum or it may prove a bit problematic…

This is therefore not quite as revolutionary as it may seem. Many other products still under study like new contraceptives for men could prove much more interesting when they get the go-ahead from the powers that be in the next few years. The contraceptive chewing gum has not yet been approved by Health Canada and is therefore unavailable to Canadians. But stay tuned!
