First things first. Hair loss is basically a perfectly normal process since a person can lose more or less 100 hair strands a day. It becomes a problem as soon as the loss becomes more significant. Generally speaking, there are two leading causes of problematic hair loss: reactive hair loss and chronic hair loss.

Reactive hair loss

This type of hair loss is generally occasional and corresponds to the most frequent form of diffuse hair loss. It is characterized by an increase in hair loss three to four months after a given trigger, hence the name "reactional hair loss."

Reactive hair loss can be triggered by a number of factors, such as:

  • Stress
  • An emotional shock
  • Medical treatment
  • Fatigue
  • An unbalanced diet
  • A diet
  • Seasonal changes
  • The post-partum period

These factors can disrupt the hair's normal life cycle, resulting in precipitous, diffuse and simultaneous hair loss of up to 300 hairs a day. Normally, the situation returns to normal within less than six months.

Chronic hair loss

Unlike reactional hair loss, chronic hair loss in men is often hereditary, and hormonal in women. It is characterized by episodes of hair loss, tending towards hair shortening, reduced hair density and the appearance of short, fine hair.

In men, chronic hair loss affects 70 to 80% of individuals, mainly between the ages of 30 and 40. The most common form of alopecia is baldness, i.e. marked hair loss on the forehead, temples and top of the head.

In women, it affects between 29% and 42% of individuals and tends to occur between the ages of 20 and 40. Alopecia is progressive and affects the temples in particular, causing a reduction in hair volume.

These chronic episodes often last longer than six months.
