How to Choose a Sunscreen?
With so many sunscreen options available at the pharmacy, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. SPF, broad-spectrum protection, water resistance… what should you really look for? Here are the key factors to help you make an informed choice and enjoy the sun with confidence.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF): A Must-Have
The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburns.
The higher the SPF, the more UVB rays are blocked. However, the difference is sometimes smaller than you might think: an SPF 50 sunscreen blocks about 98% of UVB rays, compared to 98.3% for SPF 60. No sunscreen, even SPF 100, blocks 100% of UVB rays.
Broad-Spectrum Protection: Don’t Forget UVA Rays
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, as it also protects against UVA rays. These rays contribute to premature skin aging, including wrinkles and dark spots, and may also play a role in the development of certain skin cancers.
Water Resistance: An Advantage for Active Days
If you enjoy swimming, playing sports, or spending time outdoors, choose a water-resistant formula. The duration of water resistance is usually indicated on the product label.
Even with a water-resistant formula, it’s important to reapply sunscreen after the recommended time, especially after swimming or heavy sweating.
Proper Application: The Key to Effective Protection
Even the best sunscreen cannot provide optimal protection if it is not applied properly.
Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin and don’t forget commonly missed areas, such as the ears, neck, back of the neck, and tops of the feet. Remember to reapply regularly, especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
To cover the entire body, an adult generally needs about 30 to 45 mL of sunscreen, roughly the equivalent of a palmful.
