The human ear is a very complex system consisting of several components used among others uses to transmit surrounding sound vibrations to the brain, allowing us to hear.
Some ear structures also have an important role to play in our balance. This is the case of the labyrinth which is the set of the inner ear and which is composed of a series of tubes, bags and nerves. Labyrinthitis, is actually a sudden viral infection of the inner ear causing inflammation and therefore causing more or less intense vertigo that may be accompanied by nausea, dizziness, loss of balance and sometimes disorders hearing.
There is no way to prevent the onset of labyrinthitis nor is there a treatment to cure it. However the symptoms experienced generally resolve by themselves within a few days to a few weeks. Some drugs could be used to reduce dizziness and associated discomfort. Ask your healthcare professional. While symptoms can unfortunately stretch on for couple of months, it is important to mention that labyrinthitis rarely comes back a second time during a lifetime!
