Medication information

Buccolam 10mg/2mL buccal liq.

This medication is typically used for the treatment of prolonged acute convulsive seizures. Its effects can be felt within a few minutes.

Instructions

To produce its effect, this product must be absorbed through the buccal mucosa and not swallowed:

  • Take the syringe out of the tube.
  • Put the cap off the tip of the syringe.
  • Gently pinch and pull back the cheek.
  • Put the tip of the syringe into the back of the space between the inside of the cheek and the lower gum.
  • Slowly press the syringe plunger until it stops. If necessary, approximately half the dose may be given into one side of the mouth, then the other half into the other side.


Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. This medication may be taken with or without food.

Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during your treatment. Grapefruit can seriously affect how this medication works. Consuming alcohol may intensify the effect of this product. Limit alcohol consumption to occasional small quantities.

Side effects

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some adverse effects, notably:

  • it may cause memory loss;
  • it may cause headaches;
  • it may cause confusion;
  • it may cause dizziness - use caution when getting up from a lying or sitting position and use caution if driving;
  • it may cause a general feeling of weakness;
  • it may cause drowsiness that lasts until the next day - use caution until you know how you will react.

Each person may react differently to a treatment. If you think this medication may be causing adverse effects (including those described here, or others), talk to your health care professional. He or she can help you to determine whether or not the medication is the source of the problem.

Storage

As with most medications, this product should be stored at room temperature. Store it in a secure location where it will not be exposed to excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight. Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed of safely. This product must be kept in its original packaging. This drug is occasionally sought out by some people for non-medical purposes. Please store in a safe place.

Additional Information

This medication may interact with other medications or supplements, sometimes significantly. Many interactions, however, may be dealt with by a dosage adjustment or a change in medication schedule. Check with your pharmacist before using this medication in combination with any other medications (including non-prescription products), vitamins or natural products.
