It differs from Crohn's in that it only affects the innermost lining of the rectum and large intestine (colon) - the terminal portion of the digestive system. It affects both men and women alike and usually appears between the ages of 15 and 40 years. This chronic disease is intermittent with periods of exacerbated symptoms and periods that are symptom-free.
