Condoms and Dental Dams

Published on 6 août 2025 at 4:00 / Updated on 27 août 2025 at 8:01

Condoms are the best defence against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They are also an effective form of contraception. Although not as well known, dental dams are another form of protection. A dental dam consists of a thin sheet used for oral sex.

External condom

The external condom is a very thin cylindrical sheath that is placed on the penis to contain and collect sperm. Once penetration occurs, the condom acts as a barrier between the partners. Several types of external condoms are available on the market:

  • Latex condoms (the most affordable and most widely available)
  • Synthetic polymer condoms (best option for people allergic to latex)
  • Natural membrane condoms (made from animal membrane, not recommended for protection against STIs)

Advantages

The external condom is very effective, easy to use, inexpensive and is only used when the need presents itself.

Disadvantages

You have to remember to use it and it can reduce spontaneity. Also, some people may be allergic to latex or to the spermicide found on certain brands of condoms. Furthermore, because they don't cover all of the skin, they may not offer complete protection against the human papilloma virus (HPV) and hepatitis B.

Directions

  • Avoid having broken nails or rings on your fingers when putting on the condom.
    • Pinch the air out of the tip of the condom to leave space for semen collection.
    • Unroll the condom as far as it will go on the erect penis.
    • Never use two condoms at once, as the friction between them can cause them to break.
  • After ejaculation, pull out of your partner while the penis is still erect. To prevent sperm from leaking out of the condom, hold it firmly against the base of the penis.
  • Tie a knot at the open end and dispose of it in the trash.

Internal condom

The internal condom is a very thin cylindrical sheath that is inserted into the vagina prior to intercourse. The external end is large enough to cover the vulva. Flexible rings at both ends help keep the condom in place.

Advantages

The internal condom is a type of birth control that offers good protection against most STIs. Since it covers the external area, it may be more effective than the external condom in protecting against certain STIs such as herpes and HPV. The internal condom can be inserted up to 8 hours in advance.

Disadvantages

It can be difficult to insert and, if improperly inserted, can tear or slip. Some people have also complained about the noise it makes during intercourse.

Directions

  • Avoid having broken nails or rings on your fingers when putting on the condom.
    • Pinch the smallest ring and insert it as far as possible into the vagina. The other end must remain outside to protect the external region.
    • Never use an internal condom and an external condom together, as the friction between them can cause them to break.
  • To remove it safely, simply twist the outer ring so that the semen stays inside the condom, then gently pull it out.
  • Tie a knot in the open end of the condom and dispose of it in the trash.

Dental Dam

Dental dams are used during oral sex as protection from STIs. It is a sheet applied to the partner's vulva or anus that serves as a barrier between the mouth and these areas.

Dental dams are available in specialized shops or online, or you can make your own using a condom. Simply cut off the tip of an external condom, then cut it lengthwise. This will provide the rectangle that you need. The use of kitchen plastic wrap (e.g., Saran Wrap) is not recommended because its effectiveness has not been proven.

Advantages

Using a dental dam is the only way you can protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections such as herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B during contact between the mouth and the genital and anal area. Since flavoured condoms are widely available, using a dental dam can add a playful element.

Disadvantages

They may not stay in place easily.

Directions

  • To help keep the dam in place, place a few drops of lubricant between the vulva or anus and the dam itself.
  • Use hands to help keep the dam in place.
  • Do not stretch it or let it flip over.
  • Dispose of it in the trash after use.

General recommendations

  • Use a new condom for each sexual act.
  • Store away from light and heat (avoid leaving them in a car or in your trouser pockets).
  • Always check the expiration date on the packaging.
  • Carefully tear open the wrapper without ripping the condom (avoid using your teeth).
  • To prevent irritation, use a lubricant that is compatible with the material of the barrier device. Certain lubricants could weaken the material and cause it to break.
  • Avoid flossing or brushing your teeth vigorously immediately before or after oral sex, as this can cause microabrasions in the gums and increase infection risk.
  • Do not dispose of it in the toilet.
