Working from home has become a part of many people’s lives for quite some time now, but not everyone knows the best practices of this new lifestyle. Here are a few tips and tricks you can adopt to optimize efficiency and, above all, the enjoyment of telecommuting.

  • Start by clarifying your tasks, deadlines and expectations with your immediate supervisor and/or your team. Check whether daily or weekly meetings (by phone or virtual) would be useful to maintain communication and motivation.
  • When it comes to managing priorities, you'll probably be less distracted and solicited when telecommuting than in the office, so think about prioritizing more demanding tasks that require more time and energy.
  • Try to stick to a schedule and a routine. Make a to-do list so you can see how your projects are progressing.
  • Create a comfortable work environment: Set up an ergonomic desk and chair as well as any other office supplies you may need. Ideally, you should work in a secluded room. Decorate your office space with plants and pictures if you want it to feel more welcoming. Adjust light and temperature for added comfort.
  • Take the time to dine outside your office space without your computer. You may decide to prepare your lunch the day before, for example, to save time and avoid having to go into the kitchen every ten minutes to open the fridge.
  • If time permits, go outside at lunchtime or change rooms when you take a break. Even at home, it's important to set aside time for movement. Whether it's simple stretching or small movements to correct your posture, getting moving will help you regain your concentration.
  • As for clothing when telecommuting, some prefer to opt for ultra-comfy clothes; however, you'll probably feel more prepared for a productive day in professional apparel.
  • For the sake of security and confidentiality, be sure to log off when you've finished your work.  In addition, make sure you have the necessary protection for your office hardware (antivirus, updates, etc.).

There are many advantages to telecommuting. Appreciate them!

  • Fewer distractions by your colleagues
  • More flexible and organized time management, according to your preferences
  • No traffic jams to get to work
  • Increased productivity, which will contribute to greater job satisfaction.
