Most women simply loooove shoes! And for many of them, high heels are the key element to lovely, long legs. Are you a shoe fanatic? If so, do you think you will be happy with how your feet will look in twenty years?
Besides ageing, high heels are one of the biggest causes of foot problems in women. If you wear this type of shoe often, or perhaps everyday, you are definitely setting yourself up for having to contend with foot problems in the future.
As we age, our feet become larger and longer, while the natural padding located under the heel and forefoot actually thins. When you wear heels that are higher than five centimetres (2 inches), your foot actually slides forward in your shoe. This creates unnatural pressure points that change the natural alignment of your body and spine. Consequently, it is the cause of many painful problems.
Women who are in the habit of wearing high heels, shoes that are too small or too tight, are more susceptible of suffering from various foot problems. Pain in the knees and back, corns and calluses, toenail problems, hammertoes, bunions, shortening and tightening of the Achilles tendon, neuromas, stress fractures, and joint pain in the ball of the foot (metatarsalgia) are only a few examples of the problems that arise from frequently wearing high heels over many years.
Are we to forever banish high heels from our wardrobe? Of course not! But keep in mind they should be reserved for special occasions only. The norm for everyday wear should be a flat, comfortable shoe (heels that are no higher than 4 cm or 1.5 inches), with a wide toe box. So do not click those heels fashionistas, for we are not in Kansas anymore…
