Movember: It’s not just about prostate cancer

Published on November 7, 2018 at 13:30 / Updated on October 25, 2023 at 12:01

In most countries around the world, men live on average six years less than women. Beyond its involvement in prostate cancer research, the Movember movement also aims to understand and combat other health problems that reduce men's life expectancy.

The 3 aspects of Movember

The Movember Foundation collects donations in order to take action in three main areas that have an impact on men's lives:

Prostate cancer

As the most common cancer in men over 45, knowing some important facts about the risks involved is essential. It's also important to remember that early detection is key. Understanding your risk of prostate cancer also means knowing when to act. Assess your level of risk based on your age, background and family history.

Testicular cancer

Testicular cancer, being the most common cancer in young men, deserves careful attention. There are simple ways of examining your testicles to familiarize yourself with them and get a good baseline. Learn to self-assess in 3 simple steps and always listen to your body.

Mental health and suicide prevention

Knowing how to spot the signs of distress in a loved one can save a life. In four steps, ALEC helps guide a conversation with someone who may be in trouble.

  1. Be on the lookout
  2. Staying tuned
  3. Encouraging action
  4. Continue the conversation

Discover the complete approach and know how to ask the right questions to save a life.

Ways to contribute to Movember

Wear the Mo

Once again, this year, men are invited to have their moustache sponsored during the month of November.

The money raised is used to fund research into prostate and testicular cancer treatment, as well as national and local initiatives to improve the quality of life of men battling these cancers.

So, wear the Mo and show that you're for healthier men.

Get moooving for mental health

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every minute, somewhere in the world, a man commits suicide. In Canada, some 3,000 men take their own lives every year.

To remember the 60 men we lose around the world every hour, Move for Mental Health was the way chosen by the Order of the Mo.

Inspirez le monde et vos proches et courez ou marchez 60 kilomètres en une seule fois ou plusieurs fois dans le mois.

Organizing a MO-ment

Not the athletic type? No problem! The Ordre de la Mo encourages you to organize your own MO-ment. Bring your friends or colleagues together in an event that appeals to you, and take the opportunity to collect donations for men's health.

Mo your own way

There are many ways to support the Mo movement. Mo your own way is an opportunity to set yourself a personal challenge during the month of November. Whether it's climbing a mountain, reducing your screen time on social networks or beating a personal record, all motivations are good to support and improve men's health.

Make your own contribution to Movember and improve men's health for a healthier world.
